«Ho iniziato a fare educazione ambientale nel 1988, Anno Europeo dell'Ambiente, con quattro percorsi in diverse scuole dell'infanzia di Brescia: Il Fiume, Le Torbiere, Il Cavallo, La Natura in Città; un progetto sulle Api a Milano per 600 bambini, insieme con la cooperativa TRAPPER. Poi altre esperienze con la Direzione Scuole Materne di Brescia e con Coop Lombardia in diversi comuni della Regione su I Bambini e l'ambiente Nel 1997 prese il via un lavoro capillare con le scuole di Brescia, concluso nel 2003 con l’uscita del CD ROM multimediale Alla Scoperta della Natura in Città. A partire dal 2004-2005, per una decina di anni, abbiamo raccolto centinaia di immagini fotografiche e video di insetti, ragni e millepiedi nei giardini e cortile delle scuole di Brescia e dintorni, con pubblicazioni in DVD e in rete, il video e la mostra fotografica Concittadini Inaspettati, esposta anche a Santa Giulia nel 2009. Tanti altri video sono disponibili in rete, tra cui le sintesi del 2006 (soprattutto con la scuola dell’infanzia) e del 2014. Nel 2009 ho pubblicato il libro I bambini e l'ambiente, per un'ecologia dell'educazione, con prefazione di Mario Tozzi. Dal 2010 ho provato ad allestire nel Web il Museo Virtuale dei Piccoli Animali che, pur funzionando in modo saltuario ed episodico, negli anni ha avuto attenzione e recensioni, e ne ho scritto anche in una importantepubblicazione internazionale e Si sono inoltre stabilite collaborazioni con interlocutori da diverse parti del mondo, che hanno continuato a svolgersi soprattutto nel gruppo Facebook. Ora si è deciso di rendere il Museo permanente, all'interno di un progetto più vasto in via di elaborazione, in collegamento con colleghi, gruppi e associazioni in Italia e all'estero.
I testi nella pagine sono in inglese - facilmente traducibili con le apposite app - ma il fulcro sono le stanze del Museo, in cui i bambini, esplorando come in un album di figurine o nella mappa di un videogioco, sono invitati a osservare le immagini e i movimenti macro dei piccoli animali - i cui nome scientifici sono uguali in tutto il mondo - sapendo che in gran parte sono stati osservati e raccolti da bambini come loro. Soprattutto, stimolano a un intervento attivo i video – i più provengono dalle scuole bresciane – con le voci dei bambini che "in diretta" commentano le scoperte che stanno facendo. Ai bambini di solito non serve più spiegare nulla: guardano, ascoltano e sono pronti a uscire in giardino e a trasformarsi subito in esploratori! Recuperando altro materiale raccolto negli anni, o che ci arriverà da nuove attività o dai corrispondenti nazionali e internazionali, inseriremo anche storie e testi, nelle lingue originali , oltre ad ampliare le sezioni che già esistono, ci auguriamo con il contributo di tanti.

Il Museo Virtuale dei Piccoli Animali, a partire da una facile osservazione della realtà sotto casa, è un progetto che, con un impegno minimo e in un tempo brevissimo, mette insieme l'osservazione diretta della vita animale nel suo ambiente, l'emozione, la curiosità e le capacità collaborative dei bambini, l'uso attivo della tecnologia per produrre e condividere informazione e conoscenza. Io sono a disposizione per illustrare e spiegare il progetto a chiunque sia interessato, programmare eventuali interventi diretti nelle scuole, o anche suggerire ai docenti possibili modalità di azione in autonomia. Sono ovviamente disponibile anche per presentare il Museo Virtuale dei Piccoli Animali in qualsiasi occasione, durante l'anno 2023 Brescia e Bergamo Capitali Italiane della Cultura e oltre».

A message to Brescian schools, by 2024 from Paolo Beneventi (with his personal path to the Museum)
«I started doing environmental education in 1988, the European Year of the Environment, with four courses in different kindergartens in Brescia: The River, The Bogs, The Horse, Nature in the City; a project on bees in Milan for 600 children, together with the TRAPPER cooperative. Since 2010 I have tried to set up the Children's Virtual Museum of Small Animals on the Web which, although working in an occasional and episodic way, over the years it has received attention and reviews, and I have also written about it in an important international publication. Collaborations have also been established with interlocutors from different parts of the world, which have continued to take place above all in the Facebook group. Now we have decided to make the Museum permanent, within a larger projectbeing developed, in connection with colleagues, groups and associations in Italy and abroad.
